Light travels fast, but not instantly. When you look at a distant star, you see light that began its journey years, centuries or even millions of years ago.
Distance becomes time
One light-year is the distance light travels in one year. A star 100 light-years away appears as it was roughly 100 years ago. The farther astronomers look, the further back in cosmic history they observe.
Telescopes collect old light
A telescope gathers more light than the human eye and can separate wavelengths that reveal temperature, motion and chemical composition. Large observatories therefore act as instruments for studying both distant places and earlier eras.
What we can learn
Comparing galaxies at different distances helps scientists study how stars form, how galaxies change and how the universe expanded. The picture is not a single snapshot but a collection of different moments arranged by distance.
A limit to the view
There is a boundary to what can be observed because the universe has a finite age and light has a finite travel time. Looking farther does not show an infinite past; it shows the oldest light that can reach us.
